KLICKITAT COUNTY — Klickitat County Sheriff Bob Songer said he was blindsided by the Klickitat County Commission’s 2-1 vote on March 29 to pursue closing the county jail and sending inmates to the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) in The Dalles.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., reintroduced the Water for Conservation and Farming Act on June 21 “to help communities in Oregon and across the West suffering from ongoing drought,” according to a press release.
HOOD RIVER — On Jan. 31 the Port of Hood River, in collaboration with the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Authority, launched the new bridge replacement project website. The new online domain, HoodRiverBridge.org, will be the new home for updates, statistics and facts on bridge replacement efforts. HNTB Bridge Replacement Project Director Michael Shannon said the port is working on a smooth transition from moving documents and other public information on the port’s existing website to the new webpage. Project staffers are working to direct online traffic to the new website before they plan to remove existing content on the Port of Hood River’s website in March or April.
WHITE SALMON — The City of White Salmon approved both a vehicle licensing fee of $15 and a sales tax of 0.1% to fund future transportation projects, including road reconstruction and smaller chip seal projects, at last week’s city council meeting.
Democrats will remain in charge of both chambers of the Oregon Legislature when the new session opens Jan. 9, but will lack the 60% majorities required to pass revenue-raising measures on their own.

The adult Tule Fall Chinook salmon have started returning to the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery in Underwood. Early season forecasts are predicting nearly 50,000 Tule Fall Chinook salmon back to the Bonneville Pool.

White Salmon interim City Administrator Paul Koch says he’s enjoyed working with city staff and elected officials since the beginning of his time in service with the city in March and is looking forward to working through many tasks as his contract was recently extended through the end of the year.
The White Salmon Valley School Board met July 28 to approve the 2022-2023 budget and to approve a purchase of 115 district laptops for the upcoming school year.
