The Eagles led from start to finish Oct. 5 during a win against Reynolds and two days later fell behind early and had to fight back to win, 9-8 against Parkrose. The 2-0 week has HRV ready to make a stretch run with the district playoffs two weeks away.

There are three teams undefeated in the OSAA Class 1A Big Sky League volleyball standings, led by the Dufur Rangers and the South Wasco County Redsides at 3-0 along with the Condon High Blue Devils at 2-0.

In what was undoubtedly their most exciting match of the season thus far, the Hood River Valley High Eagles (3-4) recorded a come-from-behind 3-2 non-league win over the Class 4A Banks Braves (1-6) Sept. 14 at Banks High School.

Sherman County and Dufur will resume their football rivalry for the first time since 2017 with a game 7 p.m. Friday at Dufur High School.

Dufur won last week via forfeit over the Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat High Cougars (1-1). The Cougars had COVID health and safety concerns, and they had only 10 of their 16 players available for the contest. Sherman lost a nonleague game Friday at DeSales Catholic School in Walla Walla, Wash., 60-20.

After two years of competing in the OSAA Class 1A six-man football Special District 4, the Sherman County Huskies (0-1) returned to eight-man football against DeSales. Their season-opening contest against Crane was canceled Sept. 4.

Unfortunately for The Dalles, the difference between the second half and the first half was like the difference between night and day.

It’s all-hands-on-deck in more ways than one for Columbia High’s young football team this season.

The Bruins graduated a large and talented senior class and will rely on numerous underclassmen this fall. What’s more, head Coach Dan Smith is on leave for another couple of weeks, so the Bruin assistant coaches are also having to step up into new roles.

HOOD RIVER — Juliet Thompson Hochman is a world class athlete. A New England native, Hochman played every- thing growing up; field hockey, basketball, softball, diving, tennis, soccer, horseback riding. She even played on the boys’ lacrosse team in middle school. But rowing is where Hochman found her “first” athletic life.

The Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat High Cougar football team concluded its spring schedule in March with a 2-2 win/loss record. The Cougars, guided by ninth-year Coach Antoine Montoya, will be seeking to continue to improve during the OSAA Class 1A eight-man football fall season.

The Sherman County High Huskies football team has one its largest turnout of players as second-year coach Kyle Blagg welcomed a group of 24 athletes to the first practice on Aug. 16 at Sherman High in Moro. With more players, Sherman returns to the OSAA Class 1A eight-man football level for the first time since 2018. The Huskies competed the last two years in the Special District 4 six-man league.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, there weren’t any OSAA-sponsored football playoffs following the six-week spring season in April — and no official state champion. However, if there were playoffs, the unbeaten Dufur High Rangers would’ve been favored to win their 11th OSAA Class 1A eight-man football championship. That said, few would argue that it’s appropriate to refer to the Rangers as the defending champs.

The Hood River Valley athletics program and director Trent Kroll will be awarded the Quality Program Award (QPA) by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). Kroll will accept the award during the annual National Athletic Directors Conference in Denver. During the conference, high school athletic directors from across the country will be in attendance to hear keynote speakers, network with other ADs and participate in workshops.
