Trout Lake’s 2-1 girls soccer start this fall season can be attributed to a couple of factors, but perhaps the main one is because the Mustangs have a talented and dedicated roster of players.
Unbeaten Montesano rallied to the football on defense and was efficient on offense during a 53-0 road win at Columbia High on Thursday in White Salmon.
The Dufur High Rangers (2-1) and the Sherman/Condon High Huskies (0-2) renewed their rivalry in OSAA Class 1A eight-man football for the first time in four years last Friday in a Big Sky League matchup at Dufur High School.
There are three teams undefeated in the OSAA Class 1A Big Sky League volleyball standings, led by the Dufur Rangers and the South Wasco County Redsides at 3-0 along with the Condon High Blue Devils at 2-0.
In what was undoubtedly their most exciting match of the season thus far, the Hood River Valley High Eagles (3-4) recorded a come-from-behind 3-2 non-league win over the Class 4A Banks Braves (1-6) Sept. 14 at Banks High School.
When you’re unbeaten you deserve a day at the beach — don’t you?
Don’t get the wrong idea here; the Columbia High girls soccer team happened to be in the neighborhood, so Coach Adriana Clayton afforded them a little down time to frolic in the Pacific Ocean surf. And, perhaps let their tired legs recover after their 6-0 win against Ilwaco High on Saturday.
A Jekyll-and-Hyde start to the girls soccer season has afforded Hood River Valley Coach Amanda Orand to focus on practice plans with different emphasis points.
There will be no easing into the Intermountain Conference volleyball schedule for Hood River Valley and The Dalles when they open league play Thursday on the road.
The highly regarded South Wasco County High Redsides volleyball team has certainly proved that it’s one of the top contenders at the OSAA Class 1A level — recent proof was a five-match win streak.
Columbia High’s season-opening cross country meet brought a smile to Coach Mike Hannigan’s face, but don’t expect the Bruin coach to go easy on his young team because of it — in fact, it might lead to the exact opposite.
Sherman County and Dufur will resume their football rivalry for the first time since 2017 with a game 7 p.m. Friday at Dufur High School.
Dufur won last week via forfeit over the Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat High Cougars (1-1). The Cougars had COVID health and safety concerns, and they had only 10 of their 16 players available for the contest. Sherman lost a nonleague game Friday at DeSales Catholic School in Walla Walla, Wash., 60-20.
After two years of competing in the OSAA Class 1A six-man football Special District 4, the Sherman County Huskies (0-1) returned to eight-man football against DeSales. Their season-opening contest against Crane was canceled Sept. 4.
So many things can go wrong in football’s kicking game — and that’s just in practice. Put 11 opponents on the opposite side of the line of scrimmage and the odds of success decrease exponentially — at any level of play.
Stevenson blocked a fourth-quarter field goal attempt and returned it for a touchdown Friday, dashing visiting Columbia High’s hopes of a Gorge Bowl win. Perhaps, not surprisingly, the ensuing conversion attempt failed, and the Bulldogs won, 6-0.
Three Babe Ruth teams, with players from The Dalles, Hood River and White Salmon, played a full local season this spring despite the many challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Local Babe Ruth baseball finished off the season on June 16.
The South Wasco County High Redsides boys and girls basketball teams had among their best finishes ever in the 2021 Oregon Class 1A state basketball tournament this week.

The Columbia High School girls soccer team is young. Their coach, Alondra Cazares, is a 21-year-old CHS graduate and their 17-player roster includes five eighth graders.
Multiple missions were accomplished by Columbia High’s football team Saturday afternoon, at its home away from home, Seton Catholic’s reliable turf field. The Bruins’ game was moved to Vancouver because conditions were far from optimal on their home field. Coach Dan Smith’s team responded wi…

Host Seton Catholic foiled Columbia’s come-from-behind, fourth-quarter effort Saturday and then scored on its first offensive play in overtime to edge the Bruins, 28-26, in the Trico League football opener for both schools.
