Frederick “Fred” Alden Mooney, 88, of Mt. Hood, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 10, 2026. Fred was born July 5, 1938, in Hood River, Oregon, to Guy Mooney and Lola (Forbes) Mooney. He grew up in the Hood River Valley and attended Central Vale, Wy’east, and Hood River Valley High School.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Throughout his working years, he worked as a carpenter, a trade well suited to a man who loved building, fixing things, and working with his hands. Even away from work, Fred enjoyed building and working on his home. He was a hardworking and determined man who especially enjoyed cutting firewood.
Faith and family were important parts of Fred’s life. Over the years, he attended Odell Baptist Church, Tucker Road Baptist Church, and Hood River Alliance Church. He loved his family deeply and loved God. Fred also had a wonderful sense of humor and could find something to laugh about in nearly any situation. He especially enjoyed making those around him laugh. Fred is survived by his wife, Patricia “Pat” (Whitaker) Mooney; his children, Bart Alden Mooney (wife Linda Mooney) and Amanda Rae Mooney; his grandchildren, Amy Baggett, Madison Mooney, Rachael (Mooney) Barthel, and William Dunn; his great-grandchild, Ava Stockel; and his sister, Patricia “Pat” Galligan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Lola Mooney; his siblings, Norma Hayes, Everett Mooney, Winna Fae Adams, and Ora May Hartley; and his stepdaughter, Tennille LaDouceur Dunn.
A memorial service honoring Fred’s life was held Aug. 29 at Tucker Road Baptist Church, Hood River. He was laid to rest privately at the Idlewilde Mausoleum, Hood River.
The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to the Parkdale Fire Department, whose members came to Fred’s aid on numerous occasions, and to the CNAs and nurses of Providence Hospice for their countless hours of compassionate care and attention. Memorial contributions in Fred’s honor may be made to the Parkdale Fire Department or Providence Hospice.
Fred will be remembered as a hardworking, stubborn, good-humored man who loved his family, loved God, and wasn’t afraid of a little hard work. His ability to find humor in life and make others laugh will be greatly missed.
