GOLDENDALE — In the Klickitat County Commissioners morning workshop session Sept. 8, Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Cranston announced the county had chosen local resident Larry Cantrell from a large pool of applicants for the public records officer position.
"Larry started last week,” she said. “We are working on getting him on all the necessary programs for public records processing. I know the departments and offices are very excited and anxious to have that transition take place, but we're trying to make sure we have our I's dotted and our T's crossed as much as possible. Given the situation, we're also exploring software, which we'll likely be coming to you with a proposal shortly."
Cantrell said he retired from the military in 2015 after a 30-year career and went to work for the state as an auditor and benefits officer.
Grants discussed
Earlier in the meeting, two different department heads at different times reminded commissioners on the value of applying for grants.
“If you don't have it, you can't spend it” Public Works Director Jeff Hunter said. “If you have it and they change their mind, it doesn't hurt anything."
Senior Services Director Sharon Carter added, "If we don't apply for the grants and then actually get service, we're paying taxes in for things that we're not actually getting any benefit from."
It’s a theory attributed to Wayne Gretzky: "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take."
Ridership up
Carter also presented ridership data showing growth on the connector route from 84 riders in April to 177 in July. The dial-a-ride service, she said, provided 5,285 trips through July, averaging approximately 755 per month. And she projected the county was projected to provide approximately 27,000 rides for the year.
Public hearings scheduled
Community Development Director Scott Edelman reminded commissioners that they had a public hearing on an ADU amendment on Sept. 22, a continuation of the recreation park ordinance hearing on Sept. 15 (after press deadline), and a workshop on a solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) ordinance on Sept. 21.
Under the consent agenda, commissioners approved:
• Klickitat County Health Department Consolidated Contract 25-27 Amendment 15
• Klickitat County 9-1-1 Dispatch Fire Management Assistance Grant Agreement
• Final Acceptance and Release of Retainage for the Curve Warning Signs & Guideposts CRP 381, State Aid No. HLP-2020 (054), Contract No. TA-7979 in the amount of $17,466.54.
• Final Acceptance and Release of Retainage for the 2025 Annual Striping Program RN 642-25 in the amount of $18,926.14.
• Settlement Agreement for right of way along Long Road, County Road Number 15400 for the Long Road Reestablishment (CRP 354) project.
• Klickitat County 9-1-1 Dispatch Vector Solutions Master Software as a Service Agreement
• Engagement Agreement between TDJ, CPA the Treasurer's Office
