SALEM — As though to prove the remark, “wise as an owl,” a bird of that variety endeavored to assume control of Oregon politics by occupying the governor’s chair for 12 hours. Attaches of the executive department found a wise old owl in Governor Pierce’s chair, when they arrived at the state house. Apparently the bird had entered the room the evening before and spent the night in the executive’s seat.
Ezra Meeker, recent guest of The Dalles in the last lap of his sixth transcontinental journey, had the first wreck of all his travelings yesterday when his large pullmanlike motor vehicle bumped into a heavy truck near Chanticleer Inn, on the Columbia river highway, swung off the highway and went into a ditch.
