THE DALLES — The Dalles Police Department responded to an armed robbery at Denny’s restaurant, 1710 West 6th Street The Dalles Tuesday, evening, May 9, according to a May 16 Facebook posting by the department.

Hood River police detectives responding to a Sunday, May 14 theft in progress at a local department store have now arrested the suspect and confiscated cash and drugs. The suspect, who fled on foot as officers arrived and was seen going into the trees and bushes on Westcliff Driver in Hood River.

An Officer with the Hood River Police Department (HRPD) stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction March 16, according to a press release. During the officer’s contact with the driver, several signs of impairment were observed. After field sobriety tests (SFST) the driver was taken into custody.

Simeon Hill, who was taken into custody following an incident on Feb. 2 in which he allegedly fired multiple shots in his home on Cascade Avenue in Hood River, was released from jail on $2000 bail, following his arraignment hearing in Hood River on Feb. 23.

HOOD RIVER — The school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24 was very much on the minds of administrators, board members and the lone public commenter at the June 1 Hood River County School District board meeting, held in person at Hood River Valley High School.

A structure fire was reported in the 3600 block of the Odell Highway April 5. Wy’East Fire District was first on the scene, the station located a short distance away. Fire Chief/CEO Greg Borton reported the structure was fully engulfed on arrival at approximately 9:55 a.m.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a climber in distress from the summit of Mount Hood on Saturday morning, Jan. 22, at about 9:50 a.m. A 27-year-old Eugene man, Iain Moses, reported his equipment was failing and he could not descend the mountain. He was climbing alone.

Hood River — Hood River County’s Budget Committee May 13 approved the 2021-22 county’s $43.1 million all-funds budget, adding salary increases to last-minute changes. The general fund, the portion of the budget supported in part by property tax revenues, makes up $23.4 million of the total.

The Budget Committee increased County Commissioners’ $15,904 annual salaries by 10 percent for 2021-22, in an attempt to bring salaries into line with other county commissions. Wasco County’s three part-time commissioners, for example, are paid $47,680.08.

Hood River — Residents near the Ken Jernstedt Airfield may get a little noise relief this summer, thanks to a quieter propeller on the tow plane used by the Hood River Soaring group. The non-profit organization uses gliders to provide pilot training and sport gliding staged from a Glider Port at the Airfield. At the recommendation of the Airport Noise Workgroup, the Port of Hood River, owner of the airfield, is pitching in $6,000 — about 75 percent of the four-blade propeller’s cost and delivery.

Hood River — For years, the City of Hood River has talked about a new police station. May 12, the city’s Budget Committee heard compelling reasons to take action. Police Chief Neal Holste told the Budget Committee that, due to lack of space, collected crime evidence — including toxic drugs — were sometimes displayed on the same tables in the squad room used for staff meals.
