Last week’s photo was identified by Kathy Watson, former port commissioner, as the creation of the Hood River waterfront. The county made the whole waterfront out of fill and slag. The plan was said to be land for commerce and industry. During Watson’s tenure on the commission in 2006-07, some wanted to build high-end housing there. The community preferred a regional park and open space, with some job creation. Hence big park, dotted with small amounts of manufacturing, restaurants and other services, on the artificial land today. The photo of a very small dump truck was taken around 1937, according to the Hood River history museum.
