It’s playoff time in Class 1A volleyball as the six-team Big Sky Conference District Tournament starts Wednesday. The No. 15 ranked South Wasco County High Redsides earned the Big Sky West Division No. 1 seed with a 6-0 league record and a 16-6 overall mark.

Columbia High moved above .500 in Trico League volleyball play Thursday with a three-set, playoff-clinching road win at Seton Catholic.

Equally important, the Bruins finished the week by improving their overall record to 8-4 after also winning a district cross-over match Oct. 12 against Elma and placing second at a tournament Saturday in Corbett.

Horizon Christian School’s soccer fortunes were bolstered Friday with the Hawks’ tie with unbeaten Damascus Christian in Hood River.

The tie moved the Hawks into contention to finish second in the nine-team, 3A/2A/1A Special District 7 (eight-player division) regular season behind Damascus.

Going into last Thursday’s Intermountain Conference boys soccer game versus the Crook County Cowboys, The Dalles High Riverhawks were winless in their previous three contests. But facing the winless Cowboys (0-6 IMC, 0-10 overall) proved to be the solution to ending the slump.

Fall competition for most high school athletics is nearing the end of the regular season and playoff seeding is becoming more visible by the day. The Hood River Valley girls soccer team (1-5 Intermountain Conference, 2-8 overall) was still in contention for a playoff spot, until the Eagles were defeated by the Ridgeview Ravens (3-1-2 IMC, 3-5-2 overall) on Oct. 14.

The Dalles High Riverhawks girls soccer team hasn’t qualified for the OSAA Class 5A state playoffs yet, but are hoping to do at the conclusion of the season Oct. 28. The Hawks’ 4:30 p.m. Intermountain Conference game Thursday versus the Ridgeview Ravens (3-1-2 IMC, 3-5-2 overall) at Ridgeview High in Redmond will feel like the playoffs for both teams.

No. 19 ranked Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat High lost, 34-26, to Union in a Special District 2 Class 1A eight-man football nonleague game Oct. 15 at Lyle High School. But Coach Antoine Montoya used the game to rest a few of his players, as the Cougars have their sights set on a much bigger prize — a state playoff berth.

The South Wasco County High Redsides (3-4) concluded the Special District 4 Class 1A six-man football season with a 53-16 road win over the Huntington Locomotives (1-6) Oct. 15 at Huntington High School. It marked the highest scoring game of the season for the Redsides.
