THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks played their fourth consecutive OSAA Class 4A football road game Oct. 8 versus the Class 3A Umatilla High Vikings and won 20-0 behind a stingy defensive effort.
The Riverhawks (0-1 Special District 5, 3-3 overall) bounced back from a 47-20 loss Oct. 2 at Baker the previous week to top the 1-4 Vikings.
It was the first shutout of the season for the Riverhawks, guided by third-year Coach Nate Timmons. The Riverhawks outgained the Vikings in total offense 299 yards to 115 yards. The Riverhawks had total of 13 first downs, while the Vikings had five.
“All the guys played really good and we just had a fantastic defensive effort in getting a shutout,” said Timmons. “Everyone stepped up and played really great defense and we just did an awesome job of keep them (Vikings) out of the end zone.”
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Riverhawks went ahead 6-0 in the second period on a seven-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Rylan Deleon. He finished with 12 carries and 138 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Deleon scored on a 30-yard touchdown run in the third period and a 49-yarder in the fourth.
Senior receiver Austin Cummings (four catches, 71 yards) led the Riverhawks in receiving. Senior running back Creighton Clack (19 carries, 78 yards rushing) and sophomore quarterback Ben Graham (6-for-13 passing, 77 yards) also helped lead the Riverhawks offensively.
The Riverhawks will play their fifth straight road game Oct. 16 in a 7 p.m. SD5 matchup versus the defending league champion and No. 11-ranked La Grande High Tigers (2-0 SD5, 4-3 overall) at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
“La Grande looks like they have a pretty good team,” said Timmons. “Obviously it will be a tough game, but we’ll be well prepared for it. We’ve done a good job of preparing for games all year and I think that we’re definitely capable of doing some good things against La Grande.
“It’s always nice to play at a really nice facility like they have there at Eastern Oregon University.”
