HOOD RIVER — The No. 7-ranked Hood River Valley High Eagles extended their winning streak to three last week in OSAA Class 5A girls soccer.
The Eagles (6-3-1 overall), guided by second-year Coach Kevin Haspela, opened their six-game Northwest Oregon Conference schedule Oct. 7 with a 4-1 road win over the Parkrose High Broncos (0-1 league, 4-4 overall).
“We are excited to shift into the league portion of our season, and our goal is to win the league,” said Haspela. “We don’t want to underestimate any of our opponents. It looks like Sandy and Putnam will be our strongest opponents. We are focused on team defense from the high pressing striker to our composed back line.”
The Eagles scored a goal with 30 seconds left in the first half to take a 2-0 halftime lead over the Broncos. The Eagles then scored 28 seconds into the second half for a 3-0 advantage.
HRV capitalized on a mistake by the Broncos who scored on an own goal following a shot by Eagle junior Cate Haspela. The Bronco goalkeeper stopped Haspela’s shot, but a teammate inadvertently kicked the ball into the goal. The Broncos avoided a shutout when they scored on a second half penalty kick for the final margin.
Junior forward Josie Faaborg scored two goals, junior midfielder Ellie Giordano scored one goal, and senior midfielder Ainsley Chown had an assist for the Eagles.
Averaging 2.6 goals scored per game, the Eagles’ offense is led by Ellie Kinsfogel, Lily Clermont, Haspela, Faaborg and Sophie Romero.
“We are working on varying offensive threats through wing play and midfield connections, while moving the ball around deliberately as a team,” Haspela said.
The Eagles will be seeking to reach the state playoffs for a third consecutive season. “I’m so proud of the team,” said Haspela. “They’ve really worked hard in the nonleague part of our schedule, which included several very strong opponents. This group can battle very well too. They are so fun to coach and I’m just looking forward to watching them grow as a team.”
The top two NWOC squads earn automatic berths in the 16-team OSAA state playoffs beginning Nov. 4. A third place NWOC team could possibly earn a playoff spot, as well, with an at-large berth that will be determined by the OSAA Colley computer rankings.
