HOOD RIVER — The Gorge Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to noon at the yellow hangar at 3650 Airport Drive on Saturday, Sept. 21. People interested in aviation are invited to attend.
CAP pilots will be available to talk with current pilots about opportunities for flying in the Civil Air Patrol, such as search and rescue, and orientation flights for cadets, said a press release.
“Youth will hear from the current Cadet Commander about the youth program in CAP,” said the release. “They will be able to see some Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Kits available for teachers and students to review and use. All STEM Kits are available for teachers for free through the CAP Aerospace Education Membership program.”
Youth ages 12-18 and their parents will hear about opportunities for leadership, STEM, aerospace, and emergency services. CAP is a nonprofit organization that has a strong youth program. CAP teaches leadership, fitness, character development and aerospace through its Cadet Program. Cadets get five free rides in a powered aircraft. They also can attend an annual Encampment, which increases their knowledge and abilities.
The Gorge Composite Squadron meets weekly at the airport at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights. For information, contact Commander Katherine Walker at katherine.walker@orwgcap.org.
