Following what’s known as a COVID pause in the Class 1A basketball schedule due to safety related health and protocol issues at local high schools, all Gorge area boys and girls teams will return to the gyms to resume competition for the first time in over two weeks starting Feb. 4.

The Dalles High Riverhawk and the Hood River Valley High Eagle ski teams competed in Mt. Hood League (MHL) races Jan. 28 and Jan. 30 at Mount Hood. The boys and girls teams combined for five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a boys first place for HRV’s Thorsen Welch on Friday in a slalom race at Timberline Pucci.

Intermountain Conference foes Hood River Valley and Redmond continued to serve notice that this year’s district swimming meet will prominently feature athletes from both schools. That, and the fact that based on head-to-head meetings this season, there is no clear favorite to win the title.

The Eagles and Panthers matched strokes for the second time in as many weeks Jan. 26 at a four-way meet in Madras. Redmond came out on top in both the boys (119-93) and girls (114-112) competitions. Two weeks ago in Hood River, the margin of victory was less for the Redmond boys over HRV (85-78), and the HRV girls won by a comfortable margin, 96-63.

Columbia High’s Sawyer Muehlbauer won the 170-pound division of Saturday’s seven-team Battle of the Bridge wrestling tournament at Seton Catholic.
