Snowboarding: Vic Wild of White Salmon recorded his fourth NorAm Cup victory of the 2007-08 season Jan. 4, winning U.S. Snowboarding’s Race to the Cup Series parallel giant slalom at Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Wild, recovered from last summer’s broken heel and riding as hard and fast as ever, defeated fellow Washingtonian Benjamin Fairchild of Kirkland in the men’s PGS final. He did it riding his back-up race board; he broke his primary board in the day’s second round of head-to-head racing.

“We were really excited to see Vic win,” said Abbi Nyberg, U.S. Snowboarding’s program manager. “This is his first year on the [national] team and we’re excited for him.”

On Jan. 5, Wild could muster only a third-place showing—behind Fairchild and U.S. Snowboarding teammate Joshua Wylie of Londonderry, Vt.—in the Race to the Cup parallel slalom on Howelson Hill, where Wild trains with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

XC Skiing: This winter’s 5-mile “Big Tree Ski” Nordic race will take place on Saturday near Trout Lake. The event is free and open to both competitive and recreational skiers.

Participants are asked to meet at the Pineside Sno-Park, 6 miles north of Trout Lake, where registration will begin at 9 a.m. (Vehicles must display Sno-Park permits.)

Racing will start at 9:30 a.m. on a loop-trail course designed for classic diagonal stride skiing (no skating).

Winter Recreation: Wildlife biologist Harold Cole will lead a free, two-hour snowshoe walk through the Trout Lake Preserve on Saturday.

Participants in the tour are asked to meet up with their guide at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Mt. Adams Ranger Station, 2455 State Route 141, Trout Lake.

A limited supply of snowshoes will be available to borrow on a first-come basis for those who don’t own a pair.
