WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins (2-3) notched a second straight victory in WIAA Class 1A football with a 58-16 road win Oct. 9 over the Mossyrock High Vikings (1-5).
It was Columbia’s highest scoring game of the season, and the 16 points allowed was the fewest by any opponent this fall.
“Obviously, it was a very good game for us,” said Coach John Hallead. “We were able to do whatever we wanted offensively and defensively; we held Mossyrock to less than 100 yards of total offense. We scored on every offensive possession except two — our first and only series in the third quarter and our last series in the fourth. The running clock in the second half gave us a limited number of offensive possessions.”
The Bruins built a 22-0 first quarter lead as senior running Brody Landgren (nine carries, 177 yards rushing), junior quarterback Levi Connell (4-for-7 passing, 82 yards, two TDs) and sophomore running back Sam Knott (two carries, 11 yards rushing) each capped scoring drives with touchdown runs. Senior placekicker Anderson Hernandez Pena kicked the point after touchdown after two of the scores.
In the second quarter, Landgren scored on touchdown runs of 77 and 16 yards. Connell threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Cassidy Ebbert (two catches, 69 yards receiving) and a five-yard TD to Luke Padgett (two catches, 13 yards receiving). Hernandez Pena booted four PATs in the quarter to help the Bruins extend their lead.
Ebbert scored on a 101-yard interception return in the third quarter, followed by Padgett’s two-point conversion toss to Knott to conclude the scoring for the Bruins, who led 58-8 after three.
“We had a very impressive effort by our offensive linemen, who opened huge running lanes for our ball carriers. We also had a tremendous defensive effort from everyone on the defensive line,” Hallead said.
Those linemen included seniors Trenton Boydston, Razo Salazar, juniors Judah Posini, Brayden Gross and Leyland Beyer, and sophomores Will Polkinghorn, Barret Smith and Knott. Smith led the Bruins defense with 15 solo tackles and senior Caleb Reynolds had an interception.
The Bruins will be seeking to extend their winning streak when they meet the Fort Vancouver High Trappers (0-6) in a 7 p.m. homecoming contest Oct. 16 at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
