The HRV girls soccer team finished what it started last Friday, completing an undefeated 2002 campaign with an 8-2 win over sixth-place Crook County.
Acer Lopez scored three goals Lindsay McClure had two, and Jenny Villagomez and Brittany Reed each scored one as the Eagles raised their best-ever 4A record to 9-0-5 — good for 32 points and second place in the Intermountain Conference standings.
“What an amazing year this has been for the entire team,” coach Sue Farro said. “We know we still have work to do in the playoffs, but all in all, this year has been the most fun for me.”
Farro said that despite the team’s incredible success in the IMC, the overriding feeling on the team is one of disappointment.
“The feeling is somewhat bittersweet because we know that if we had one more win, we could have won the conference,” Farro said.
Mountain View took the title with an 11-2-1 record and 34 points. Had HRV won one of the five games it tied, that would have given them 34 points and a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cougars.
“We all felt like we were the better team in both games against Mountain View,” Farro said. “If they hadn’t scored in the final few minutes down in Bend, we would have won that game, and in the end, that would have put us over the top.”
All “what-ifs” aside, the Eagles are now preparing for a first-round state playoff matchup with Westview of Beaverton on Saturday. The game will be played at 11:30 a.m. at Westside Field.
