The Columbia High Bruins boys basketball team extended its win streak to three with a pair of non-league victories last week.
The Dalles High Riverhawks girls basketball team faced a very tough opponent in the season opener on the road Dec. 2 at Banks High, losing 52-25 to the Braves.
Banks was ranked No. 6 with 17-8 record and advanced to the 4A state playoffs in addition to winning the Cowapa League Championship last year. Despite their move down to Class 3A this year, the Braves are still a strong squad after losing just three players to graduation and they have nine players returning from last year’s successful playoff team.
It’s very likely that this season could be similar to last year in terms of who the top Big Sky League girls basketball playoff contenders will be in 2023.
The Big Sky West Division champion Trout Lake High Mustangs and runner-up South Wasco will likely be the top squads again this season. Big Sky Champion Echo High Cougars (19-6 last year) and the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (16-6) each have starters returning from their 1A state playoff teams.
A confident and enthusiastic The Dalles High Riverhawk squad, guided by second-year coach Darcey Hodges, started girls basketball practice Nov. 14 with the hopes and expectations it will be enjoying success on the court this season.
