The Lyle post office will issue a special commemorative postmark on Saturday, Oct. 29, to honor the Lewis and Clark encampment at the mouth of the Klickitat River at Lyle -- 200 years ago to the day.
The unique postmark is free, and will be available at the "Lewis and Clark Station," a temporary post office that will operate under the awning on the sidewalk in front of the Lyle Hotel.
From 9 a.m.-noon, Lyle Postmaster Steve Chambers will apply the special Lewis and Clark postmark to any item bearing first-class postage. The post office will also have for sale 1,000 of the now out of print Lewis and Clark commemorative 37 cent stamp that was issued in 2004.
The journals of explorers Lewis and Clark describe the encampment at the Klickitat River (then called the Caterack River) at Lyle on Oct. 29, 1805.
The postmark event is part of a larger community celebration, sponsored by the Lyle Community Council, that will include the Lyle Fire District "chili cook-off" and a downtown parade that will begin at the Lyle Hotel.
All the events are free and open to the public.
