The Greater Columbia B League's third- through sixth-place girls and boys basketball teams tip off Yakima Valley District 5 tournament action this Friday at Toppenish High School.
The three-day tournament continues on Saturday with semifinal action at Grandview High School, and concludes next Wednesday with consolation finals and championship games at Goldendale High School. (See brackets on this page for pairings and game times.)
Girls and boys teams each will be playing for District 5's one automatic berth to state, plus spots in a reconstituted Central Washington Class B Regional Tournament Feb. 22-23 at Ellensburg High School.
From this regional stew, four girls teams and three boys teams -- including the District 5 and District 6 girls and boys tournament champions -- will qualify for state tournament play, set for Feb. 27-March 1 at the Spokane Arena.
Thanks to the regional playoff format, District 5's girls teams have a shot at as many as three berths to state; at stake for the district's boys teams is one additional state spot for a total of two possible.
That's because the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association provided girls teams in the Central Washington region one more 2002 state tournament opening than boys teams.
The allocation for girls teams is an increase of one spot; the boys' allotment remains the same as last year's.
Last year, the district tournament runners-up from the Greater Columbia B League and North Central B League played off for the first time for regional berths to state.
In those winner-to-state contests, Waterville defeated Lyle in the girls playoff, and La Salle of Yakima lost to Day Star Christian of Moses Lake in boys action.
