A pair of Hood River Valley women finished one-two in the women's 10-kilometer portion of a record-setting Nike ACG Trail Run in 2002 Ford Gorge Games competition on Sunday.
Christy Paul, the defending Oregon state high school class 4-A cross country champion, led the field in a time of 45 minutes, 15.3 seconds, while Heather Laurence of Parkdale took second and Mandy Giblin of Portland, Ore. was third.
Sisters Heather and Mandi Fitz-Gustafson of The Dalles finished in fifth and sixth.
Cam Dauler of Hood River won the men's 10K in a time of 41:33.7, just under 25 seconds in front of Tom St. Clair of Yakima, while Greg Gustafson of The Dalles was third.
Lyle resident Sherman Rouse was among the top finishers from this side of the river, placing first in the men's 50-plus division of the 10K and in the top 20 overall. His time was 49:36.9.
In the men's half-marathon a pair of Portlanders led the way, as Brent Roeger completed the more than 13-mile course in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 43 seconds. Paul Curran and Willy Hicks of Lopez, Wash. followed him across the finish line.
Jenny Wong of Oakland, Calif. won the women's half-marathon in a time of 1:39:26.6. Jenny Knight placed second and Micha Lowe of San Francisco came in third.
Sunday's trail run began with 385 registered competitors, the largest in the event's six-year history, the Whoop-Dee Trail that took the participants through the scenic Hood River Mountains.
The grueling course pitted the athletes against the terrain, as well as each other, in a test of stamina and durability.
