Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Edward Everett “Eddie” Horton, 87, of Milwaukie, Oregon, passed away Aug. 28, 2026, at the home he shared with wife Susie for 48 years. Born July 11, 1939, in Hoquiam, Washington, Eddie graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1957 and signed up for U. S. Air Force Jan. 3, 1958.
After basic, Eddie finished eight months at the Institute of Far Eastern Languages at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, learning Mandarin Chinese. Eddie was one of 19 out of 77 that graduated in January 1959. He was sent over to Osan Air Base in Songtan, South Korea, for 13 months and returned home June 1960 to Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas, with rank of E4 Buck Sergeant Airman First Class. Eddie learned computers in a couple IBM schools and then left the service in May 1962 to pursue a data management career.
Eddie’s interests were golf, skiing, pool, tennis, and sports. July 1976, Eddie was hired on at American Data Services, in Portland, Oregon, and he met Susan “Susie” Woody and they married in October 1977. She was nine years younger and admittedly naive about some things. Many of Eddie’s jokes went right over her head. Friends laughingly referred to them as “Goody Two Shoes and the Filthy Beast.”
Eddie was known for his sharp memory, sense of humor, and generous spirit; and Susie loved her life with Eddie as she was continually surprised by the wonderful, thoughtful and funny things he did in their 50 years together. Eddie helped Susie with projects she got herself into including events for work, sorority, and class reunions. There were the fun trips in United States and Canada often with family and friends along. They organized large groups of people to go to live plays and musicals. Eddie was a good cook and took over for the special-occasion dinners. He had a way with animals; and though they had no children, “Uncle Eddie” was a favorite at many of the family gatherings whether it was playing pool, UNO, magically hiding objects from the younger ones, or teaching them silly songs around the campfire.
After a long career, Eddie retired from Clackamas County Data Center on Feb. 29, 2000.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Emmett Horton and Wealthy Amelia Horton, and his three older siblings, Robert Elwood Horton, Wealthy Nadine Otremba and Barbara Jean Ward. Eddie is survived by his wife Susan Horton, brother-in-law Bill Ward and many nieces and nephews.
