State Route 14 between mileposts 57 and 61 will be closed in both directions for two nights next week, starting Thursday, July 30, at 8 p.m., the Washington Department of Transportation announced on Monday.
The project contractor plans to shut down traffic on SR 14 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both July 30 and 31 for grinding and paving through tunnels 1-5 in eastern Skamania County, said Susan Fell, spokesman for WSDOT’s Southwest Columbia Gorge Area Office.
“The highway will be open on each of the following mornings at 6,” Fell said, and added, “The public is encouraged to plan ahead and take alternate routes.”
Bridge tolls in both directions on the Hood River Bridge and Bridge of the Gods at Cascade Locks will be paid by WSDOT during the closure hours.
First responders, though, will be allowed emergency access through the closure.
An electronic message board on SR 14 in the vicinity of the Pioneer Plaza Park and Ride facility on Monday contained the erroneous message that SR would be closed July 27-31.
“The contractor did not use the correct message that was in our contract plans,” Fell said. “I’ve called them and they are making changes to clarify the closure limits.”
The work is part of the $5.2 million SR 14, 6th Street to Bingen, project to resurface 40 miles of pavement through the Columbia River Gorge by September 2015.
