Gorge under Winter Storm Watch as severe weather approaches
This weekend, a winter storm is expected to bring low temperatures and heavy snowfall to the Columbia Gorge. These conditions have the potential to be dangerous for anyone, but especially so for those experiencing houselessness. Fortunately, for those in need of shelter from the cold or supplies to brave the weather, there are resources throughout the Gorge that can help.
Wasco and Sherman county
The Dalles City Manager Matthew Klebes discussed warming resources at the latest city council meeting Jan. 8. With the recent closure of the St. Vincent de Paul Day Center, it seems unlikely the building will be used as a warming shelter by Mid-Columbia Community Action Center (MCCAC), as it has been in previous years.
However, Klebes said that The Annex, a shelter run by MCCAC located at 200 W. Second St. in The Dalles, has a surge capacity of 10 extra overnight beds. These beds are available for those impacted by the winter weather, but are temporary and only for the duration of the weather. Those using the beds must also abide by the facility’s rules and guidelines during the duration of their stay, Klebes said. For more information about available surge beds or other warming resources, visit mccac.com to complete a service request or call 541-980-0855.
Hood River County
Hood River Shelter Services, which operates under the MCCAC umbrella, runs a 24-bed warming shelter located at 1733 Oak St. in Hood River. This shelter is open until March and is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Guest intake takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Those wanted to receive services or emergency lodging should fill out a shelter intake form, available at mccac.com, or call 541-965-0990.
Klickitat and Skamania counties
Skamania County’s Emergency Warming Shelter, located near the Hegewald Center in Stevenson, officially opened today, Jan. 11, and will be available through late March. It is operated by Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP), and can be accessed Thursday through Monday evenings. Those wishing to stay in the shelter must check in between 6-8 p.m. each night and check out by 7 a.m. the next morning.
For nights that the shelter is not open, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, clients are instructed to contact WAGAP at 509-427-8229 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for assistance. Note that WAGAP closes from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.
Klickitat County does not have an emergency warming shelter, but there are two housing offices available Monday through Thursday where clients can arrange services to keep safe. In Bingen, call 509-493-2662 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or go to WAGAP’s office at 115 W. Steuben St. In Goldendale, call 509-773-6834 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or go to WAGAP’s office at 150 W. Main St.
