Umpires needed for spring season

The Mid-Columbia Umpire Association is looking for a few good men and women to umpire baseball and softball games in the upcoming 2013 high school season. The MCUA covers games for local high schools in the Mid-Columbia Area. The season starts in March and ends in May. All umpires are paid by the game. Interested individuals should attend meetings at The Dalles Middle School on Monday, Feb.18, and Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. or contact Bob Ford at 541-980-4165.

Gorge Roublaix rolls March 24

Breakaway Promotions announces a new, and rugged, cycling event for the Gorge.

Gorge Roublaix comes March 24 to The Dalles.

“It’s as dangerous as you make it,” writes promoter Chad Sperry in the website for the event, found on the Gorge Roublaix Facebook page.

The 32-mile loop rolls through the wheat country of eastern Oregon. “Course is rolling on narrow farm roads. Pavement is in good shape, gravel road sections have dirt and gravel on them,” notes the website.

“Gravel section is 3.9 miles in length and is rolling with the exception of one short steep climb on Wrentham Cutoff Road. Many of the roads have been used in the past for the Cherry Blossom Cycling Classic and the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic out near the old Petersburg School.”

Gorge Gymnasts spring into new season

Hood River's Gorge Gymnastics team started off its spring season with a success at the Pacific Edge Invitational in Newport. Three athletes competed at Level 5 for the first time, moving up after their successful fall showing at the state championships at Level 4. Poppy Miller and Taryn Schilling tied at 33.2 points for the all-around, Rosalie Dillon scored a 34.05. All three girls met the qualifying standard for post-season competition in April. Competition continues this weekend at the Multnomah Athletic Club meet on Feb. 17.
