THE GORGE — The Washington State Department of Natural Resources recently launched a new way for people to stay informed about prescribed burns near them or any location within the state. This service is not limited to burns implemented by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Signing up via the DNR Burn Portal allows a person to receive emails and/or text messages whenever a prescribed burn within their chosen distance of one or more locations is planned for the coming days. Notifications include how far a planned burn is from a location, what day the burn is planned for, the size of the planned burn, and links to additional information.
“Prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools we have for reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires and restoring the health of our fire-adapted forests and native grasslands,” Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove said. “I encourage everyone to sign up to stay informed about when this important work is happening near you.”
Users may enter multiple locations to receive notifications about, and can opt out of receiving future notifications at any time by logging into their burn portal subscription profile. Profile pages display lists of active and upcoming burns within the notification area(s) for easy reference.
