CASCADE LOCKS — The Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation recently honored former Cascade Locks resident and city council member Denise Emmerling-Baker.
She received a Standout Volunteer certificate for her work on the Main Street Cascade Locks project over several years.
Emmerling-Baker initiated the work for Cascade Locks to be recognized as a Main Street Affiliate. According to Sheri Stuart, state coordinator of the program, she then dedicated more than 750 volunteer hours and substantial personal resources to improving Cascade Locks’ Main Street and downtown area. The emphasis of the program is on “innovative projects, community-focused programs, and historic preservation to improve their vitality and enrich residents’ lives,” according to the state’s press release.
The former city council member led incorporation, fundraising, and strategic planning, securing funding and building strong community support. She was a crucial supporter for the $400,000 revitalization grant the community received.
“Denise has been a true spark for Cascade Locks, bringing people together, rolling up her sleeves, and turning big ideas into real results,” said Stuart. “Her passion and dedication are exactly what make Main Street communities so special — she’s helping create a downtown that’s welcoming, lively, and full of opportunity for everyone.”
Emmerling-Baker paid it forward, saying, “I was both surprised and deeply honored to receive this award — and even more so to have been nominated. For Main Street Cascade Locks, this recognition truly belongs to the caring, creative, and dedicated partners and individuals who have supported our organization from the very beginning and continue to stand beside us today: the city council, city administrator, port, city tourism committee, Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, Oregon Main Street, local business owners, and our incredible volunteers.”
