Gorge Commission Economic Vitality Committee, March 4 — Not enough members came to the Gorge Commission’s Economic Vitality committee meeting for a voting quorum, but they had a robust discussion about Skamania County’s economic challenges and how much the Gorge Commission or U.S. Forest Service could change policies to help. This is part of the ongoing development/conservation tension in the National Scenic Area, the backdrop for this committee. From Documenter Lynda Ontiveros.
The Dalles Beautification and Tree Committee, March 2 — Time to spruce up your garden! Members of The Dalles Beautification and Tree Committee are about to start looking around for gardens to honor. Its monthly awards program runs April–Oct., aiming to highlighting attractive gardens that are visible from the street. Also, more work is being done planting new shade trees around town and a planting project is in early stages in Lewis and Clark Park. From Documenter Lynda Ontiveros.
Lyle Fire District Board, Feb. 26 — The biggest thing on the minds of the Lyle Fire District commissioners is whether to ask voters to “lift the levy” and raise taxes for firefighting by more than the annual 1% limit. Separately, the fire hall is getting a new metal roof, and commissioners are keeping a careful eye on fire risk maps under development by the state Department of Natural Resources. From Documenter Viviana Hernandez.
