WHITE SALMON — The White Salmon Valley Pool Metropolitan Park District (WSVPMPD) has reached a series of major milestones, moving the long-anticipated community pool project significantly closer to construction.
“Over the past several months, the project has gained strong momentum through a combination of public funding, community support, and critical pre-construction progress,” said a news release.
More than $1 raised through state and community support in the last six months — $500,000 in state funding and $528,000 in donations, with Steve and Diane Maier jumpstarting the local fundraising campaign with a challenge match.
Additionally, all major permits required for construction have been secured, clearing a key hurdle and positioning the project for the next phase.
“With funding progress and permits in place, the district has formally approved moving forward with the competitive bidding process,” said the news release. “This step will provide final construction cost clarity and inform the path toward construction.”
While recent successes mark significant progress, continued community support remains essential. Rising construction costs mean that every additional dollar raised helps keep timeline on track, reduces long-term debt and ensures that public funding can be directed toward building and operating the pool.
“This project is the result of sustained community effort,” said District President Steve Harris. “We’ve made tremendous progress, and continued support will help ensure we can deliver this pool for our community.”
Summer swimming
While the community pool project continues, the district will renew its partnership with the Hood River Aquatic Center to provide summer swim access for in-district residents. Sign-ups open May 5, with swim season running from June 1 to Sept. 30. More information is available on the district’s website, whitesalmonvalleypool.org.
