Obituary: Rodney Viers

Early life: Born in the warmth of a close-knit family, Rodney was raised by his loving parents, who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and resilience. He spent his formative years exploring the wonders of his hometown, learning the importance of community and family, where he would plant the roots of his own family and forge lifelong friendships.

Military service: Rodney answered the call of duty when he was drafted into the United States Air Force. He served his country with honor and distinction, embodying the principles of integrity and selflessness. His years in the Air Force shaped his sense of responsibility and deepened his appreciation for camaraderie and service — values he would carry into every aspect of his life.

Family: A devoted family man, Rodney found his greatest joy in the love and laughter of his home. Rodney was married to Virginia Ray Coffield in 1962 and the two later divorced in 1980. Rodney shares his three older children with Virginia. Rodney later married Clarissa “Francine” Wiese in 1988; Rodney shares his younger two children with Francine.

Rodney was a proud father to his children, each of whom inherited his wit, warmth, and steadfastness. His family grew to include cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom adored their grandpa for his boundless stories, gentle guidance, and unwavering support.

Rodney’s family circle also included beloved stepsister, with whom he shared countless memories and a bond that only grew stronger through the years. The Viers family’s closeness was a testament to Rodney’s commitment to nurturing relationships, offering a helping hand, and celebrating every milestone — never missing a birthday or special occasion.

Rodney is survived by his beloved children, Mundee Ray Viers (daughter Mandee Ray, her husband Robert and their children Zachary, Allyson, Lexus, Brooke, Addisyn, and Jensen); Burton Dean Viers and his two children Chelsea and Corbin; Tamera Lynn Viers and her two children Jacob and Savannah; Joshua O’Connor Viers (married to Sherry) and his four children Pj, Bryson, Chris, and Ally; Jeremiah Kirkpatrick Viers (married to Kira) and their four children Trayton, Amaya, Savannah, and Ava. He is also survived by his stepsister Pat Overton; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Grace Connor and George “Dutch” Ellsworth, as well as his siblings Lois (Viers) Swanson, John Burton Ellsworth, and Piper (Ellsworth) Frakes.

Rodney’s life was a remarkable journey of service, compassion, and love. Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. May his memory be a blessing to all.

Personal life and interests: Rodney’s zest for life was evident in his many hobbies and interests. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in the beauty of nature, whether he was fishing on a quiet morning, panning for gold in a mountain stream, or working on his latest home improvement project. Rodney’s resourcefulness and creativity shone through in everything he did. He delighted in caring for raccoons and other wildlife, often becoming their trusted caretaker, and was always eager to share his adventures with family and friends.

Known for his quick wit and unique sense of humor, Rodney could light up any room. He was the person you called for help with a project, a listening ear, or a good laugh. His generosity extended beyond his immediate circle; Rodney was a steadfast supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, reflecting his deep compassion and desire to make a positive impact on the world.

Character and legacy: Rodney’s spirit was defined by dedication, helpfulness, and unwavering love for his family. He was a caretaker in every sense — tending to those in need, especially in the final years as he lovingly cared for his wife. Even as he faced his own health challenges, Rodney’s concern was always for others. His recent birthday was a joyful celebration, surrounded by those whose lives he enriched. Rodney’s legacy is one of kindness, loyalty, and laughter. He taught by example, showing that life’s greatest treasures are found in simple acts of love and selflessness. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Final years and passing: Rodney faced his battle with cancer with the same courage and grace that defined his life. His strength, optimism, and enduring hope were an inspiration to all who witnessed his journey. Though he is no longer with us, Rodney’s love remains a guiding light for his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers: The family requests that donations be made in Rodney’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to his heart, so that his legacy of giving may continue to shine. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, still to be determined.
