Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
David John Couch passed away on Sept. 18, 2025, at his home in Pasco, Washington. David was born in Hood River, Oregon, on March 14, 1953, to John and Katherine “Hap” Couch. He grew up attending schools in Hood River and graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 1971.
He also attended Portland Community College. David tried out several careers, including pear orcharding and police work, before starting his own excavation business, Couch Excavating. David continued to work in excavation until his retirement.
He married Laurie Duckwall in April 1974; they were married nine years before divorcing. In September 1984, he married Mary Reese and helped raise her two daughters, Nikki and Jayme.
David and Mary moved to Tri-Cities in 2020 to be closer to family. David and Mary were married just over 40 years, until Mary’s death in March of this year.
David enjoyed outdoor activities most of all with Mary at his side. They both enjoyed trips to the coast, drives in the mountains, going to car shows, and playing cards with friends. They are now together again embarking on their next heavenly journey hand in hand …
David is survived by his two daughters: Nikki (Jeff) Jones of Kennewick, Washington, and Jayme (Todd) Santoro of Dayton, Oregon; his sister Martha Couch (Wally Clark) of Portland, Oregon; four grandchildren, Mackenzie (Jacob) Conley and Tanner Booth of Tri-Cities, Washington, and Katelyn and Sophia Santoro of Dayton; sisters-in-law Vera Miller, Catherine Peck and Gloria Miller; several cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as his constant sidekick his dog Knox.
David was preceded in death by his wife Mary earlier this year; his parents John and Hap Couch; and brothers Bob and Bill Bryant.
A graveside service with mausoleum interment will be held at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m., with reception to follow at West Side Fire Station from noon to 1 p.m. at 4250 Barrett Road in Hood River.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or The History Museum of Hood River County.
