Christopher Van Tilburg, MD, a physician at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital in Occupational and Travel Medicine, Emergency Department, and Mt. Clinic at Mount Hood Meadows, was first author of a two-year project, Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) Practice Guidelines for Prevention and Management of Avalanche and Nonavalanche Snow Burial Accidents, which was published in the March issue of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, the official journal of the WMS.

Van Tilburg, who is also a medical advisor and active rescuer with Crag Rats Mountain Rescue, said the report was “the first of its kind in North America, as the guidelines previously all came from Europe, and it addresses the importance of airbag backpacks and undersnow air diverters, and it also discussed the importance of companion rescue instead of reliance on 911.”
