HOOD RIVER — On the evening of April 23, the Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) Bowe Theatre was filled with pride and promise as the school hosted its annual scholarship award ceremony. This community-wide event marked a potential historic milestone, with total awards projected to exceed $500,000, a figure believed to be an all-time record for the community.
While the event is a collaborative effort, the Hood River County Education Foundation (HRCEF) serves as the central engine behind the scholarship season. As the primary organizing donor and facilitator, HRCEF supports the scholarship cycle, providing essential infrastructure for local donors to distribute their funds, supporting students through the application process, and actively fundraising to expand opportunities. Its work ensures that the community's generosity is seamlessly connected to the students who need it most.
The success of this event is credited to the HRVHS Counseling Team, who organized and executed the ceremony. This team works tirelessly to organize the scholarship cycle, the scholarship night event, and serve as the direct link between students and the generous donors who make their future goals more attainable. The counselors’ commitment to celebrating student success was on full display as they recognized 94 local students for their academic achievements and community service.
The scale of this year’s support highlights the deep commitment of the Hood River County community to its youth:
Total awarded: More than $500,000 (final total pending)
Total number of Awards: 212 individual scholarships
Unique scholarship funds: 89 distinct funds
Community Partners: Approximately 30 local organizations and grantors
“Seeing the Bowe Theatre packed with students and their families is always the highlight of our year, but knowing we have likely hit a record-breaking award total makes this ceremony particularly special,” said Aspen McKenna, HRCEF board chair. “Our local grantors and organizations have stepped up in a generous way to invest in the next generation of leaders, tradespeople, and innovators.”
While a few final totals from the Gorge Community Foundation are still being tallied, it is confirmed that the half-million-dollar mark has already been surpassed. This investment will provide a critical bridge for students as they transition to trade schools, community colleges, and universities across the country.
The HRVHS and HRCEF extend their deepest gratitude to the 30 local organizations whose generosity makes these 212 awards possible.
