The Hood River Valley Swim Team Osprey have started off their summer season with a bang.
Eight senior swimmers competed at the Bend Swim Club A/B LC Invite at the Juniper Aquatic Center in Bend May 6-7. Thea Smith and Skyla Hollowell each swam six events and had six personal best times to lead off the team. Smith, 12, had a big eight-second drop in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) with a time of 3 minutes, 14.35 seconds, for a seventh-place finish. Her other top 10 finish was seventh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:44.43. Hollowell, 11, placed in the top 10 in all six of her events: third in the 200 IM (2:59.80), third in the 200 backstroke (3:02.53), seventh in the 50 butterfly (37.94), fourth in the 200 free (2:40.62), third in the 100 butterfly (1:27.28), and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:36.61).
Phillip Hecksel, 18, swam to five personal best times and six finishes in the top 10. He was eighth in the 200 IM (2:28.28), eighth in the 200 free (2:12.40), seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:31.74), 10th in the 200 fly (2:29.75), ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.92), and he finished top of the podium in the 50 free, with a winning time of 26.86.
Willow Hollowell, 10, had five personal best times and five top-10 finishes. She was seventh in the 200 IM (3:34.66), third in the 50 breaststroke (51.99), third in the 100 backstroke (1:32.97), fifth in the 200 free (3:07.18) and third in the 50 free (35.62). Allie Burke, 16, also swam to five personal best times and a sixth-place finish in the 400 free with a time of 5:05.37.
Nora Sandoval, 12, had four personal best times and was eighth in the 100 free (1:15.10), fifth in the 200 free with a time of 2:44.05, and was second in the 400 free (5:45.61). Nadia Smith swam to a ninth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 5:56.36. Rounding out the team’s swimmers in Bend was Sophia Kaden, who had four personal best finishes, including four-second drops in both the 100 breaststroke (1:43.13) and 100 free (1:22.41).
Spring invite
The Osprey held their annual Spring Sprinter Invitational Swim Meet this past weekend at the Hood River Aquatic Center. Nine teams and 250 swimmers from around northwest Oregon and southwest Washington attended.
Leading the charge for the Osprey this spring was Sophia Helleberg, who won all four of the 25-yard events (free, backstroke, breaststroke and fly) in the mixed 8 and Under Division and scored 44 points for the team.
Coach Shelly Rawding gave kudos to first-time swim meet participants for the HRVST — Yoon Carlson, Charlotte Evans, William Frost, Genevieve Kingsford-Smith, Helen Hoskins, Marieda Kalahar, Makenna Kincaid, Sam Munce, Molly O’Neill, Olivia O’Shea, Skye Weiseth, and Lila Witherrite.
Swimmers that swam to four personal best times included: Elijah Adams, Izaiah Adams, Maya Arndt, Jackson Bullock, Gavin Hackett, Mallory Keller, and Fergie Waag.
Swimmers who achieved three personal best times were Ivy Collins, Amy Elliott, Ava Giordano, Sophie Helleberg, Izzy McCormack, Lillie Tomlinson, and Avery Walker.
Two swimmers had huge drops in time in their events: Isa Arndt, who dropped 16 seconds in both her 25 free and 25 backstroke events, and Michelle Graves, who took over half a minute off her 500 free time.
Swimmers who dropped time in two events included: Leah Adams, Adam Burke, Claire Couvreux (who also had four top-10 finishes), Juliet Crain, Jesse Elliott, Jessica Galvez, Colin Gerald, Phillip Hecksel, Skyla Hollowell, Remmie Russo, Trudy Sanders, Leah Sandoval, Olivia Sumerfield, and Wyatt Stewart.
Other swimmers who rounded out the field by swimming their best by dropping time in one event and/or swimming on those point-getting relays included: Aili Archbald, Celilo Brun, Burke, Max Graves, Delaney Hackett, Willow Hollowell, Campbell Keller, Alea McCarty, Faith Ocheskey, Seth Millan, Sandoval, Nadia Smith, and Thea Smith.
