The HRV ski team continues to be unstoppable in the Mt. Hood League winning once again, with both the boys and the girls alpine teams winning their fifth consecutive races of the season.
With only one race left in the season — a giant slalom competition to be held this Saturday at Mt. Hood Meadows — the two teams have essentially locked up the Mt. Hood title again, as the boys team sits 10 points ahead of second place-Cleveland (10 points awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, etc.,) and the girls have the same margin between them and St. Mary’s Academy.
Montana Kurahara once again set the pace for the boys as he has done in every other race this season, taking first place out of 30 skiers last Saturday with a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 17.70 seconds. Kurahara was followed by teammate William Lamer (2nd, 1:24.38), and associate teammate Colin Howe (3rd, 1:25.27), who attends Columbia High School in White Salmon.
Also skiing for the HRV boys were Carter Rigert (5th, 1:26.76), Mitchell Lamer (7th, 1:34.85), Charles Sutherland (12th, 1:39.55), and Zack Colson (17th, 1:51.79).
The HRV girls dominated in their field of 32, taking first through fourth places and placing all their racers in the top 10. HRV’s Erin Sutherland was the fastest on the hill Saturday, completing her two runs in a combined time of 1:32.33, followed by Josie Petersen (2nd, 1:34.48), Sarah Hall (3rd, 1:38.69), and Paris Nunn (4th, 1:39.55).
Also racing was associate teammate Mattea Schwab, who attends Horizon Christian School and placed sixth overall with a time of 1:41.50. Other skiers for HRV included Jesse Nunn (7th, 1:47.61) and Nicolette Paulus (8th, 1:47.82).
After Saturday’s race, coaches will decide which athletes will attend the state meet at Mt. Ashland March 2-4.
