HOOD RIVER — The annual Gorge Paddle Challenge took over the Hood River waterfront park on July 22-24. Athletes from across the world came to the Gorge for one of the premier water sports events. The original Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge was started by Steve Gates in 2011 and featured stand up paddle board (SUP) races and relays. Today, the newly renamed Gorge Challenge has adapted to current times. When Gates lost his battle with cancer 2019, Byron Kurt was asked to take the reigns or let the event end.

Hood River Valley’s 2021 boys district championship swim team was built on depth and determination, and the Eagles will need a heavy dose of both if they are to repeat that accomplishment this season.

Steady Juan Diego Contreras was the individual winner and senior teammate Conor Blair led a group of runners with lifetime bests, resulting in The Dalles eking out a one-point win over Hood River Valley at the Intermountain Conference district cross country meet Wednesday in Pendleton.

The Dalles and Hood River Valley cross country teams opened the 2021 fall season last weekend at meets in the Gorge and Wilsonville.

The Dalles hosted the 5,000-meter Riverhawk Run at Sorosis Park on Saturday morning. Junior Juan Diego Contreras looked in midseason form, leading the Riverhawks in 17 minutes, 10 seconds. Sophomore Leo Lemann was second in 18:26. The Dalles girls were led by senior Catie Wring, who finished in 25:15, two minutes ahead of junior Lucy Booth.

When most are cutting calories, Riva Muehlbauer is adding calories including: Two cheeseburgers, bags of potato chips, chicken teriyaki, and nutrition bars as she competes.

This is not just any race. Runners often consider the 26.2 marathon the ultimate accomplishment, but for the 40-year old mother of four, the ultra-race of 100 miles is her passion.
