The Horizon Christian Hawks are now Special District 6 champions, defeating Livingstone Academy, 6-1, on the road in Salem Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks (8-4, 8-1 league) had been battling C.S. Lewis Academy all season for the top spot in the district and finally overtook the team Thursday with the decisive win.
Senior winger Cody Lingel had a hat trick in the first half alone, scoring in the 20th, 35th, and 39th minutes. Coach Oscar Stenberg said the game was a back-and-forth affair, but the momentum swung Horizon’s way when Makoa Whitner scored in the 10th minute and Cameron Arrigo added another two minutes later.
Lingel added another goal in the 50th minute, prompting Stenberg to pull Lingel and the rest of the starters. Stenberg said the subs “held their own against a good team,” only giving up one goal.
“As I stated earlier this year, this team has tremendous potential,” he said. “Wow, it was a joy to see how it all came together.”
Finishing first in the league means Horizon will get to host Damascus Christian on Monday at 4 p.m. for what will be the final game of the season on the Hawks’ pitch. Horizon previously faced Damascus (4-5-3, 4-3-2 league) on Oct. 12 in Hood River — a game which Horizon won, 3-1. Winner of Monday’s game will play in the district/state championships on Friday, Oct. 30 at Salem Academy in Salem.
