Weatherization program returns

KLICKITAT & SKAMANIA CO. — It has been about 10 years since Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) housed and operated a weatherization program to serve Klickitat and Skamania county residents. For years after the program ended at the agency, staff would refer weatherization needs and upgrades to local contractors until the contractors themselves were no longer able to provide the service.

Now partnering with Northwest Community Action Center (NCAC) of Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, WAGAP will be able to provide weatherization to Klickitat and Skamania counties once more, said a press release. Funding comes from the state and provides insulation and other weatherization improvements to homeowners and renters. 

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is designed to help low-income households enhance their home’s energy efficiency. Weatherization measures may include insulating exterior walls, ceilings, and floors, weather-stripping doors, sealing windows and gaps around the home; and heating and/or cooling systems.

The average age of a home in Klickitat and Skamania county is about 50 years. Older homes are less energy efficient, resulting in higher utility bills, further straining residents’ budgets.

“My position entails outreach, intakes, and direct services,” said Energy Assistance and Weatherization Coordinator Rachel Johnson. “I will be facilitating filling out applications for residents of Klickitat and Skamania counties and sending them to NCAC for processing.”
