THE DALLES — Police arrested a visitor to The Dalles for attempted murder in the early morning hours of July 28.
Sunfish Lake, Oregon, resident Matthew Bird was arrested after approaching a Sixth Street coffee shop with blood on his hands and face, stating he had killed a person who, he said, “attacked him in the woods with a machete,” according to The Dalles Police (TDPD) logs. Bird stated that he took the weapon away and used it to kill the other person.
The person Bird stated he killed, however, survived with an extensive stab wound in the middle of their back. They were located and treated by medics at about 5:36 a.m. after a third party called 911 for the injury, more than an hour after it was inflicted.
If the survivor of any violent event — assault, car crash, or accident — makes it through the emergency room alive, they are generally expected to survive and recover, Police Chief Tom Worthy said. That is the case here.
The stabbing victim was near Boat Basin Road.
When The Dalles Police officers responded to the coffee house, Bird had left. Other reporting parties, who called to tell police Bird’s location or to report his claim of killing someone, traced his journey towards Kramer Field. The case is still under investigation, Worthy said, because of pending medical reports.
Law enforcement is still seeking interviews with any and all potential witnesses. As Bird allegedly left the scene of the crime which he may have committed and moved around The Dalles, investigators are trying to piece together all his movements and determine where he was throughout that time. As some of the witnesses involved are transient people, they are hard to track down, Worthy noted. He asked anyone with information to call TDPD at 541-296-2613.
Bird was arrested by a TDPD officer on charges felony assault I, felony attempt to commit crime — murder and misdemeanor criminal mischief and felony menacing, and lodged at NORCOR. Bird is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Bird had been trespassed earlier that day at a Sixth Street business where TDPD contacted him after a disturbance at about 10:42 p.m. A criminal mischief report was also taken after he damaged a car near Bret Clodfelter Way a few hours later.
Once law enforcement have gathered all the facts and information they can and the active investigation is closed, it will be “placed in the hands of the DA to prosecute as they see fit,” Worthy said.
“Violent assaults are relatively infrequent in this area,” Worthy said, saying when it does occur, gets all the department’s attention.
