Hail isn’t often a headline-grabbing weather event, but it causes about $1.07 billion in property damage across the U.S. every year, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Hail-related property losses are likely to break some records in 2024 — as of July 1, the total number of hail events in the U.S. surpassed 2023’s full-year total by roughly 216%.

Texas led the way as the state receiving the most hail in the first half of the year. Torrential rain, high winds, and DVD-sized hailstones pummeled the state in May.
