THE GORGE – The Gorge-area OSAA Class 1A track and field teams will converge on Maupin this week, when South Wasco High will host the District 3-1A championship meet.
The May 21 schedule begins at 11 a.m. with field events. Running events begin at 1 p.m. The May 22 field events begin at noon with running events starting at 2 p.m.
The Horizon Christian School boys and the Echo High girls are the defending team champions.
The district schools attended final meets this past week leading up to district. South Wasco hosted a mid-week meet on May 12, in which a number of the teams attended. Some of the top marks in that meet came in the sprints, as athletes took advantage of a favorable tailwind.
South Wasco senior Bailey Udey bounded a personal best in the girls triple jump of 34 feet, 10.25 inches. Trout Lake sophomore Aurora Zoller threw a personal best 111 feet, 1 inch in the girls discus. Teammate Melody Stock ran a PR 2:21.61 (1A state leading) in the girls 800, and teammate Cora Sharp ran the 100 in a PR 12.99.
Trout Lake senior Jayden Kusky threw a personal best of 54-6.5 in the boys shot and a then-PR of 153-3 in the discus. Kusky would add to his best in the latter event – pushing it out to 154-8 on May 16 at the Jesuit Last Chance Meet. Also at Jesuit, Horizon senior Landon Whitaker jumped 19 feet in the boys long jump.
At South Wasco, Glenwood’s Ciaran McCabe won a windy 800 in a personal best 2 minutes, 8.37 seconds, and teammate Anthony Avia ran a PR 4:29.26 in the 1500.
Dufur competed May 15 at the Regis Community Twilight in Stayton, where distance runners Alessandra Mesa and Zeb Stelzer did some final prep before district. Mesa ran the girls 3000 in a PR 11:54.53, and Stelzer ran the boys 3000 in a PR 9:39.18. Ranger sophomore Jacey Calloway ran lifetime bests in the 200 (27.04) and 300 hurdles (49.11).
