PARKDALE — The Hutson Museum, located at 4967 Baseline Drive, is a small community museum with an extensive collection of geological specimens, Native American tools and other historical objects gathered from the community.

The interview featured below is the result of a project linking a student interested in local history with Hutson Museum volunteers. We hope to expand this project to include other students and volunteers as a way to build community.

Hood River history

From Oregon State College Extension Service Annual Report, December 1942- November 1943; part of The History Museum of Hood River County’s “Historic Hood River” photo collection (online at hoodriverhistorymuseum.org) is this photo taken in Odell. "This is another image for the World War II (1942-1943) era Oregon State Extension report describing how they recruited Mexican workers to replace the Japanese who had been forcibly removed from the Hood River Valley. These men are waiting in line for dinner at 'Cafeteria 2. Note the large bin of what I think is coal in the foreground," said photo collection curator Arthur Babitz. "Perhaps the coal was for cooking, or perhaps it was fed in to furnaces to warm the living quarters."

Japanese history

From The History Museum of Hood River County’s “Historic Hood River” photo collection (online at hoodriverhistorymuseum.org). "We have frustratingly little information about his image, other than it was added to the collection in 1990 and contains both an American and Japanese flag. According to this Wikipedia post that is a pre-WW2 Japanese military flag," said photo collection curator Arthur Babitz.
