The 91st annual Ketchum Kalf Rodeo is in the books. I’m very proud of our Glenwood Rodeo Association for working so hard, going above and beyond, to make it a great success. There were a few Glenwood cowboys and cowgirls competing but I don’t have the placings yet. Only one Glenwood kid, Jentry Hoctor, a 12-year old who will enter 7th grade in the fall, competed the junior barrels. While not placing in the money, she placed well and she and good horse Jessie looked awesome out there.
A special highlight of the rodeo this year was our new Glenwood School Superintendent, Dr. Jerry Lewis, singing the national anthem on Saturday. He represented our community and our school so well and sure made us proud. Thank you, Jerry.
Another highlight was the presentation of the Hank Ladiges Buckle to an Association member who has been involved in the planning and work of the rodeo for many years. Someone I think of as a Glenwood kid, although he graduated from Glenwood High school and Blue Mountain Community College many years ago, Jaylin Dale Throop, was chosen as this year’s recipient of that meaningful and so well-deserved buckle. Jaylin, thank you for all you have done and continue to do year after year, since you were a little kid.

Here’s an update on our Glenwood cowgirl, Joslyn Arnold, who competed at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming last week. Joslyn, the daughter of Bo and Casey, just wrapped up her second year on the Walla Walla Community College rodeo team. Joslyn had a couple tough first rounds in breakaway roping but finished first in the third round with a time of 1.8. She also did very well in the goat tying with three solids runs with times of 7.2, 8.6, and 7.6.
Her mom told me it was very special to have Joslyn’s great-grandparents, Bubs and Marlene Murray there with them in Casper. While Bo, Casey, Bubs, and Marlene came home to Glenwood, Joslyn stayed on with the other round and event winners to receive her beautiful ring as a winner of round three in the breakaway. She also was awarded a College National Finals Rodeo scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Congratulations, Joslyn. We all here are very proud of you.

There are other proud grandparents here, Mike and Debbie Woodward, as their grandson Kason James of Helix, OR was part of the Oregon 4-H archery team and qualified to compete at the National 4-H championship in Grand Island, Nebraska. Kason is the son of Arlie Woodward James and Don James, and will be a senior at Helix HS this fall. Congratulations, Kason.

Here’s just a little bit of school news. If you’re interested in having your child take swimming lessons this summer, you can sign up by calling Mrs. Troh in the school office at 509-364-3438. Lessons were delayed just a bit for this summer due to the current closure of the Leidl Bridge on the Glenwood Highway for repairs. The new dates are July 20-July 31.
