HOOD RIVER — On June 22, city councilors renewed an emergency declaration in response to federal immigration enforcement through the end of the year.
The declaration, enacted in December, was set to expire June 30. After receiving several credible reports of recent ICE activity, including the detention of Hood River residents, staff recommended extending the resolution another month. Councilor Doug Stepina expressed concern that ICE activity will increase during elections and moved to approve a six-month renewal. Council President Gladys Rivera seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Though the resolution is mostly symbolic — the city cannot stop ICE from coming, nor does ICE have to inform the city of its presence — council and staff have made progress towards several of its goals, including training on how to respond to ICE agent requests, creating short videos on city policy to share online, and holding four listening sessions and a town hall in partnership with The Next Door, Inc.
Council plans to discuss next steps in July.
