Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
James Q. Johnson, a lifelong resident of the Mid-Columbia district and The Dalles, Oregon, passed away June 9, 2026, at the age of 98. The only child of Ralph Q. Johnson and Grace I. Johnson (Read), Jim attended The Dalles High School, Oregon State College, and graduated from The University of Oregon.
While in Eugene, Jim met and fell in love with fellow student Marni (Marion Galla) from Roseburg, and they were married March 22, 1951. That summer, Jim and Marni moved to the ranch and began their 58 year long marriage.
Jim was an active community member and was particularly committed to improving the lives and livelihood of wheat farmers. He was instrumental in developing an insurance program for farmers, served on the school board at Petersburg, was an active member of the Oregon Wheat League, and was awarded The Oregon Conservation Man of the Year for Wasco County in 1968. He was a Shriner, a Mason, an Elk, and led a Boy Scout troop for years. In later years, he took part in the digitalization of historic photographs for the Wasco County Pioneer Association, and transported countless county residents to their cancer treatments in Portland.
A private family burial was held at Odd Fellow Cemetery, The Dalles. A celebration of life will take place the evening of Aug. 29 at The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Marni Johnson Memorial Scholarship at Columbia Gorge Community College or Shriners Children’s Hospital, Portland, Oregon. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com.
