Study after study has shown the benefits exercise has on people as they age. The National Institute on Health states that as people get older, “taking it easy is risky.” Researchers state that regular, moderate physical activity can help people maintain strength and fitness, improve overall health, and maintain independence.
When older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it is not because they are getting older. Often, it is because they are not active. An inactive lifestyle can lead to increased doctors’ visits, hospitalizations and medications. Exercise aids in delaying disease and is an effective treatment for chronic conditions. It helps people with high blood pressure, as well as balance and walking problems. Also, moderate physical activity can help people manage stress, improve their mood, as well as their cognitive function.
If you have not been active for a long time, or if you have a chronic health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease, you should consult a doctor before beginning a new exercise routine. Start out slowly and increase your workouts gradually. It is important to remember that exercise might seem difficult at first, but it gets easier with time. Choosing an activity that you enjoy or that will bring you closer to others or the outdoors is a great place to start.
Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation has a range of options for seniors. The Hood River Aquatic Center has a 92 degree therapy pool, which is great for water walkers, anyone who needs aqua therapy, and for those who like to stay a little warmer during water aerobics. Every weekday there is a water aerobics class in the 82 degree recreation pool from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. This low impact class is designed to get the heart going through a variety of exercises with noodles, hand weights, and barbells along with the body’s natural resistance in the water. The cost for this class is just general admission. Lap swimming is a great activity to build cardiovascular endurance and overall strength. It is available most of the time the pool is open, except for a couple of hours after school.
The Indian Creek trail is great for people who like the outdoors. On the trail they can go for a brisk walk or a light jog. There are three sections to the Indian Creek trail. Each is about a mile in length, and connects various neighborhoods. Also, the Barrett Park perimeter trail connects to Section 3 of the Indian Creek trail near the high school. There are also neighborhood parks, such as Culbertson Park and Odell Community Park. They offer options for many activities, such as open field space for stretching, tai chi, or yoga, along with play structures for the grandkids and basketball for everyone.
