BINGEN — A member of the Bingen City Council was invited to sit in on a committee for the proposed Cascade Renewable Transmission project, a power cable buried in the Columbia River.
Councilor Eric Schrdoer volunteered, hoping to share information with the council as its representative. However, Schroder explained that, as a committee member, he was prohibited from discussing the committee’s work outside of the meetings.
Schroder resigned from the committee and informed the council about the process without sharing details. Environmental advocates and Pacific Northwest tribes have expressed serious concerns about the project. Opponents include Columbia Riverkeeper, the Friends of the Columbia River Gorge, and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. They believe the project could create long-term risks to the ecosystem and indigenous cultural resources. The council discussed assigning another committee member, possibly a Bingen citizen, to represent the city’s interests.
The next Bingen City Council meeting is set for Tuesday, October 20, at 6 PM, at City Hall. Public comment is welcome.
