THE DALLES — The City of The Dalles Beautification & Tree Committee bestowed the July Beautification Award to residents Judy and Ray Smitke for their garden at 2311 Radio Way.
“The Beautification Award recognizes residents and businesses that contribute to the appearance and livability of The Dalles through exceptional landscaping, property maintenance, and community pride,” said the City of The Dalles.
Judy and Ray Smitke moved from Portland to The Dalles six years ago, bringing their perennials and passion for plants with them. Through a blend of curiosity, experimentation, and persistence, they have since created a whimsical space to complement their new home.
They rearrange the plants each year based on their ability to grow in the changing climate and how they can better enhance the space. Alongside the greenery lay garden ornaments and rocks thoughtfully placed, adding their own layer of texture and charm. It’s a colorful landscape that reflects the homeowners’ creativity and passion for foliage.
“I garden by whimsy,” said homeowner Judy Smitke. “If I like it, I plant it. If the hummingbirds like it, I plant it. If a plant doesn’t grow well or look good where I put it, I move it the next year.”
As the season shifts, the Smitkes look forward to continuing to evolve their garden and share its natural beauty with their community in The Dalles.
