Connor Storrie is having quite the year. After November and December, everyone knows his name because of his brilliant performance in the hit hockey romance Heated Rivalry. But before that was released, he also wowed those on Criminal Minds: Evolution with what he brought to screen, so much in fact, that they made a huge adjustment to his character.
“First of all, we met Connor in Episode 4 and it was directed by Adam Rodriguez and he read for us. And so we were like, ‘Who’s this guy? He’s great. We love him.’ And he was only supposed to be in Episode 4 and he was so good that we were like, ‘No, he’s going to have a bigger role than we thought,'” Criminal Minds: Evolution showrunner Erica Messer tells TV Insider.
Instead of just the one episode, Storrie will now be in four of the 10 episodes of Season 19, which premieres on Thursday, May 28.
“This was before any of us knew what his fall preview would be of Heated Rivalry,” Messer stresses. “He’s just so good — not only crazy talented, but so kind, so funny, so wonderful to have on set. So, it was one of those things that we kind of adjusted the back half of the season to have his character have more agency in the story we were telling because he was so good.”
The BAU and fans will meet his character through a case — the trailer shows him in an interrogation room — and then it spirals from there.
“We get to talk to him and he’s kind of a jerk and we’re like, ‘We feel like there’s something else going on with this guy.’ And we kept trying to connect him to this other mystery woman who’s played by Jessi Case. And we were like, OK, how are these two going to come into play for the bigger turn by the end of the season?” the showrunner explains.
In building that out, “we kept escalating it. So, next thing you know, Connor Storrie’s getting drugged and thrown in the back of a trunk and then he’s getting tortured and all kinds of stuff ends up happening to him,” she continues. “And I just remember every time he was in a script, I’m like, ‘So sorry, so sorry. You came in, you auditioned for this stuff in the BAU and now we’re throwing you in a trunk.’ But he is such a great sport about it all and again, was just so compelling on screen that we wanted to use him as much as possible.”
