"What a day" it will be on Saturday, May 3, in White Salmon.
From 10 a.,m. to 3 p.m, downtown White Salmon businesses will be offering 5 percent of their sales (limited) to Gorge area schools.
Music will be ongoing throughout the day for listening and visiting pleasure, as well as restaurants offering their specialties.
The downtown businesses have, for three years, addressed the needs of local schools in this way. This year's event also celebrates new flower boxes going in front of south Jewett businesses.
The beautifully crafted boxes have been designed and built by students in the horticulture, wood and metal classes at Columbia High School.
Cinco de Mayo and May 1 festivities also offer a wonderful opportunity for people to gather and enjoy the beautiful and dynamic community in which we live.
Project Open Door students will be washing cars in the parking lot of Sterling Bank. Master story teller Joe Paris will share Cajun tales and classic Aesop fables at 3 p.m. in front of the Creamery.
A highlight of the day will be The New Iberians from Portland, playing Zydeco and Chicago blues on the west end of the downtown district at 2 p.m. Zydeco dance step instructions for all ages will start at 1:30 p.m. so that when the music starts, the feet are ready.
In the evening, from 7-10 p.m. the band will play at the White Salmon Grille. Zydeco instruction will begin at 6 p.m. along with simple supper fare for those who wish. There will be a cover charge.
