A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Idlewild Cemetery with a reception following at the family home, 1229 Icy Rd., Hood River.

Katherine was born July 23, 1917, to George Ernest and Anna Johanna (Stuben) Walther in The Dalles, Ore. She was raised and educated in The Dalles and has been a resident in the Columbia Gorge ever since.

Mrs. Clemmons spent most of her years as a full time mother, but somehow also made time to work as a bookkeeper for AGA Association, B. Clemmons Lumber Company and the Clemmons Cherry Orchard.

She was a member of the Mosier Tea Cup Club. Katherine enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and keeping up with current news and politics. Her family remembers her for being a loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Clemmons is survived by her daughters Karen Adair of Hood River, and Barbara Burdick of Vancouver, Wash., grandsons Randall Adair of Beaverton, Ore., and Teunis Wyers of Tucson, Ariz., granddaughter Johanna Wyers of Irvine, Calif., and great-grandson Zachary Adair of Beaverton.

Sarah Palmer

Sarah Lucy Palmer of Puyallup, Wash., died there July 10, 2003. She was 92 years of age.

Sarah was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Portland, Ore., to Samuel Alfred and Lucy Ronco Tucker.

Sarah loved to sew, do needlework, and loved flowers and her garden. She was a licensed practical nurse for over 20 years and a minister’s wife for 72 years. She and and her husband, Alfred, were world-wide missionary travelers. When he retired in June of 1975, they moved to Puyallup.

Survivors include daughter Dawn L. Palmer Golden-Carling and her husband Donald Carling of Puyallup; son Donald A. Palmer of Gorst, Wash.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rev. Alfred S. Palmer; daughter Dorothy Ann Palmer; son Douglas Henry Palmer; and sister Nancy Perry.

Graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery in Seattle, with memorial to be held at the United Methodist Church, 1919 West Pioneer Way, Puyallup, Wash., at 2:30 p.m. on July 20. Hill Funeral Home, of Puyallup, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Sarah Palmer Memorial at the United Methodist Church, Puyallup, Wash., or Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98125.

Afton Dykman

Afton Elvilah Irving Dykman, 63, passed away at her home Monday, July 7, 2003.

She was born Aug. 21, 1939, in Hood River, Ore., to William F. and Afton Delilah Jensen Irving. She was educated in Pocatello attending Washington Elementary, Franklin Jr. High and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1957. She spent the summers in Oregon with her family.

Afton married Keith Dykman, and they were married for 24 years and later divorced. Afton was the mother of four children: Ron, Reid, Connie and Karin.

Afton worked for 37 years for I.S.U. as the director of the Instructional Materials Center. Afton was a member of the Golden Girls along with Ellen, Karen, Jocelyn, Marcia, Sharon Rosalee, Nancy, and Charlotte who is deceased. Afton was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Afton enjoyed collecting dolls, antique shopping, sewing, spending time at her retreat in Island Park, but especially enjoying her children and grandchildren. Afton was fun loving, giving, crafty, and had a dry wit.

Afton is survived by her children: Ron (Shauna) Dykman, Pocatello, Idaho, Reid (Cathy) Dykman, Spokane, Wash., Connie (Preston) Brower, and Karin (Vince) Fay, all of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren: Treisha and Brittney Dykman, Weston Dykman, Kelly Hall, Sean, Brady, and Nolan Fay; brothers: LaMont and (Genevieve) Irving, Cascade Locks, Ore., Seth (Jane) Taylor, Emmett, Idaho, David R. (Jan Carpenter) Walker, Pocatello, Jerald D. (Ranae) Walker, Idaho Falls, Idaho; sisters: Lois Harrison, Pocatello; Patricia (Ralph) Hesgard and Martena Pennington, Cascade Locks; and her dog, Skippy Ray.

Afton was preceded in death by her parents, William and Afton Irving. Her parents from Pocatello, Raymond and Elvilah Walker, three brothers, Babe, Pete and Pee Wee; two grandsons, Cameron and Connor Dykman.

Funeral services were July 11 at Colonial Funeral Chapel, 2005 S. 4th Ave., Pocatello with Laren Noble officiating. The viewing was July 10 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial followed at Mountainview Cemetery.

Hulda Walters

Hulda Walters, a former Hood River, Ore., resident, died July 4, 2003, at a Forest Grove, Ore., care facility. She was 100 years of age.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 10, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. A reception will follow.

Hulda was born July 14, 1902, in Napoleon, N.D., to Andreas and Magdalena (Schlicter) Sayler. She was raised and educated in Underwood, N.D. On July 1, 1923, she and William Walters were married in Underwood. In 1943 they moved to Portland, Ore., where William worked in the shipyards. Following the war, they returned to North Dakota and then moved to Hood River in 1947.

Mrs. Walters had worked at A.G.A. Cannery for 21 years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening and cooking and was an avid Blazer fan. Her recipe for cinnamon rolls is still being used in a local restaurant. In 1969 she moved to Portland, Oregon then to Cornelius, Ore., in 1981 and to North Plains, Ore., in 1994. In 1998 she moved to the care facility in Forest Grove.

She is survived by her sons, Gerald Walters of Hood River; Wilbert Walters of Alpine Lake, W.V., and Arlen Walters of Camas, Wash.; two daughters, Darlene Dorman of North Plains, and Betty Wade of Lewiston, Idaho and her sister, Gertie Landsiedel of Turtle Lake, N.D.

Sixteen grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Her husband and great-granddaughter Chloë Walters preceded her in death.

Vault interment will be at Idlewild Cemetery.
